After finishing our food, I stand and walk to the another waiter to pay. As I’m paying, I look over my shoulder to find Luna talking to Dylan again. Wait! Are they exchanging numbers? What the hell, Luna? I thought she didn’t have time for dating.

She gives him a quick hug before walking toward me. “Thank you for lunch. It was good.”

“What was that?” I snip.

“What?” She turns to follow where my eyes are pointing. “Oh, that. Dylan wants to catch up later. So, I gave him my number and told him to text me when he’s free.”

“I thought you said you didn’t want to be in a relationship?” I cross my arms like a child throwing a tantrum.

She looks me up and down. “I don’t. He didn’t ask me on a date. He asked to catch up. I haven’t seen him in a while. So I said sure.” She mimics my stance, crossing her arms over her chest. “What’s your problem?”

“I don’t have a problem. I’m just saying, make sure he knows that.” With that, I turn around and walk out the building, leaving her behind.

She races after me and grabs on my arm, tugging me backward. “Nick, what’s wrong? Why are you acting like some jealous boyfriend? We’re just friends. So, I need you to dial back the jealousy factor to zero.”

Once again, I’m not jealous. That word doesn’t even live in my vocabulary. “I’m not. I’m just looking out for you.”

“I can look out for myself. Please, don’t ruin this day for me,” she pleads.

I take in her warm golden-brown eyes and realize how childish I’m being. It’s her birthday. She’s supposed to be enjoying today. I take a deep breath and wrap her hands in mine. “Alright. Let’s go. We have plans.”

When we reach my car, I hold the door open and let her get in first. I pull out my phone to see if I have any missed texts from Dean, but there’s none. So, I open my map and pull up the directions to the fair. What are the odds the Boston State Fair is the same weekend as her birthday?

Once I get directions, I hop into the car and off we go.

“Where are we going now?” Luna pats her legs like an anxious child.

“Someplace fun.” I respond, taking in her beautiful smile as her dimple deepens in her cheeks. Her smile could light up an entire town. Once again, I’m reminded of how happy I am to be in this girl’s presence. Not just happy, but the luckiest man ever.
